2010Got Picky Eaters or Food Allergies?

Well, I think I may just have the answer to your prayers. Check out the recently launched Yummly.com, a recipe site that actually understands you and your family’s taste preferences. Simply “feed” Yummly your tastes — whether it be your likes and dislikes, diets, allergies, nutrition, cuisine, price, time, ingredients you have on hand, or all of the above — and it will find recipes for you (from Epicurious, Food Network, All Recipes and more) that meet all your criteria. Cool, right?
So here’s how it works. Let’s say you you have one child who can’t have dairy, you’re on a low carb diet, your spouse doesn’t eat red meat, and no one in your family likes tomatoes. Now let’s say you have a package of chicken breasts and some red peppers in the fridge and you need some inspiration for what to do with it. You sign onto Yummly and go to the FoodFinder, search for recipes with chicken breasts and red bell peppers and you’ll be able to see almost every recipe on the internet that meets your criteria. That means: they’ll all have chicken and red bell peppers; none will have tomatoes or dairy; and they’ll all be low carb. Want the nutritional info? It’s on there too.
Like many recipe sites, Yummly is interactive. If you make a dish, you can rate it, take a picture and load it onto the site, but you can also edit a recipe, make substitutions, and save your version. What makes Yummly unique is that it has a social networking component, a “Facebook for Foodies” if you will. It’s still in beta but eventually you’ll be able to connect with friends and other people who have similar tastes — TasteBuds — and share notes and recipes.
I’m always on the lookout for great recipe sources and thought this one was worth sharing, especially since so many of us have food allergies or picky eaters.

Wow, that seems like a really amazing site! I’ve bookmarked it and plan to use it to create the weekly dinner menu for my picky family. Thanks for sharing

thanks for sharing this site — just used it to make dinner for my nut and egg allergy daughter. great site! can’t believe it’s just in beta.

Awesome concept. You can only imagine how excited I was to read your review on this site since my 4 year old son is on an elimination diet to rule out what he is sensitive to. He is off of gluten, nuts, dairy, soy and refined sugar–so it has been tough. There was a glitch in the site though. I punched in peanut allergy and still a recipe came up with peanut butter–the nice thing though is a quick skim of the ingredient list and you know what’s inside. It seems very user friendly. Thank you for sharing!!

It is a great concept. I did a quick search for dairy allergy, though, and a salad with blue cheese dressing came up. It had blue cheese and sour cream in it.

Hi Daphna & Kath – I am one of the founders of Yummly and want to get to the bottom of the problems you had. Can you email me directly and let me know what you were doing when those things happened? Thanks! Here’s my email address: dave [at] yummly [dot] com
