How To Make The Best Smash Burgers (In 20 Minutes)

Smash burgers are exactly what they sound like: burgers that have been smashed onto a hot griddle or skillet, sizzled until deeply browned, and topped with melted cheese.

Let’s get started!

What You'll Need To Make Smash Burgers

• Ground chuck • Freshly ground black pepper • Garlic powder • Onion powder • Ground mustard • Worcestershire sauce • Vegetable oil, for cooking • Kosher salt • Cheddar cheese • Hamburger buns

Combine beef and seasoning

01

Combine the beef, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, ground mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.

Mix well

02

Using your hands, mix until evenly combined.

Form thick patties

03

Form the meat into 4 large meatballs,  then pat each ball into a 1-inch-thick disc; smooth out the edges as best you can.

Chill and Season

04

Refrigerate for 15 minutes and then season all over with kosher salt.

Smash and cook

05

Place the burgers on a hot skillet and firmly smash them flat with a metal spatula  Cook for a few minutes until brown and crusty on the bottom.

Flip the burgers

06

Top with cheese

07

Top with the cheese and cook for 2 minutes more for medium-rare to medium burgers, or 3 minutes for medium to medium-well burgers.
