Grilled Asparagus & Feta Salad

Asparagus feta salad 3

This grilled asparagus salad is the kind of wholly satisfying dish that makes you wonder if you might possibly be a very happy vegetarian. It’s so simple, yet so good.

Asparagus feta 11

Like most vegetables, asparagus tastes better slightly charred and caramelized, and the direct heat of the grill is the best way to accomplish that. For this recipe, be sure to find nice, thick asparagus spears (the skinny ones will burn and get mushy) and get your grill nice and hot.

Asparagus feta 3

Coat the spears with extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt and pepper, then grill them until tender-crisp.

Asparagus red onion 12

Toss with crumbled feta and lemon zest and – voilà – you’re done. Proof that simple really is fabulous.

Serve this salad room temperature with grilled fish, chicken or meat (particularly these Perfectly Grilled Chicken Breasts or this Grilled Flank Steak).  Or try it on its own for lunch or a light bite — all you need to complete the meal is a hunk of warm crusty bread to sop up all the lemon-scented olive oil and feta.

Servings: 4
Total Time: 15 Minutes

  • 1 bunch thick asparagus, about 24 spears, ends trimmed
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest, from one lemon
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice, from one lemon
  • 1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese

  1. Preheat grill to high.
  2. Place asparagus spears in baking dish and toss with 2 tablespoons olive oil, salt and pepper.
  3. Put asparagus on the grill, making sure spears are perpendicular to grates so they don't fall through. Set asparagus dish next to grill (do not clean). Cover and cook asparagus for 3-4 minutes, until nicely browned and tender-crisp. Remove asparagus from grill and place back in baking dish. Let cool, then transfer spears to cutting board and cut into 1½" pieces. Place cut asparagus back in dish, then add remaining tablespoon olive oil, feta, lemon zest and lemon juice. Toss gently and season with more salt, pepper and lemon juice to taste. Serve room temperature or cold.

This recipe was SO delcious! I was too lazy to grill, so I baked the asparagus instead, but turned out just as good. And it was room temp when I served it…still so good!

  • Heidi

    Hi Jennifer,
First I must say – I am so grateful to have discovered your site via Huffington Post. You’ve inspired me to cook more and actually enjoy it – thanks to your helpful advice, gorgeous pictures, and of course – the delectable finished product. So far I’ve made 5 of your recipes in the last 3 days!!!- and will make them over and over again. Thank you!

I would love to make this recipe – but have no bbq – so – I was thinking of roasting the asparagus instead. What do you think?

    • Jenn

Hi Heidi, Thank you! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the recipes. It’s perfectly fine to roast the asparagus…Simply preheat your oven to 450 degrees, and then toss the asparagus with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast on a foil-lined baking sheet for 8-10 minutes, or until tender-crisp.

      • Heidi

:) Thank you very much for the time and temp. Will do! Happy Easter. Happy Spring.

  • Brianna

Your asparagus AND your grilled chicken were AMAZING!! I was planning a different chicken bbq but then saw yours and thought, what the heck, I’ll give it a try… so EASY and GREAT! My guests devoured both!

  • too good

  • Julie

sounds good! I’m going to try this tonight but instead of grilling it right on the grate I’m going to use a grill basket for fish/veggies. That way I can cut it into pieces first and I won’t lose any asparagus to the coals! You still get the grill marks and charred flavor!

  • brittany

i added cherry tomatoes to mine….so yummy!

  • Tamar

I am on a diet that is vegetable rich and this sounds great. Can I bake it instead of grilling?

    • Jenn

Hi Tamar, You could roast the asparagus but the flavor wouldn’t be quite the same. Hope that helps!

  • Rachel

Grilling and sauteing are my favorite ways to cook asparagus! The addition of the feta and lemon send it over the top. Love this idea! Adding tomatoes sounds really good too.

  • erica

Loved this….served with a grilled swordfish

  • trisha dowling

  • frankie

I served this at a Bunco dinner and it was the biggest hit of any dish this year. Thank you.

  • Amber

I made this tonight, my husband says this is definitely a keeper. We loved it. I am so looking forward to making more of your recipes they all look so good. Thank you so much!

  • Rosemary Vanelli

I used a broiler pan- the kind that comes with most ovens to roast my asparagus on the grill. Most people have one of these pans and I was able to use thinner asparagus in the recipe.

  • Love the idea:)

  • I love it…simple and fresh!

  • Doris

Yum. Made this recipe for Easter. The family loved it!

  • made grilled asparagus tonight for diner, bought feta this afternoon, then found this recipe after dinner…so bummed, will try with the leftover asparagus tomorrow for lunch.

  • Christine

  • Diana

    Looks yummy definitely will try.

  • Nichole

I had a similar dish at Noodles and Co. They substituted the feta with parmisan and I’m sure since this was fast food it was tossed with lemon juice. T was still very good and very expensive. This recipe is amazing and so much cheaper!

  • Sharron

This was delicious the day before Christmas when I first made it, but the next day was way too lemony. I thought it would be a great dish to make ahead, but it wasn’t. It was really good after it was first made though
