This quick, three-ingredient hot dog relish is spicy, tangy, and loaded with flavor. It’s the perfect topping for hot dogs, burgers, sausages, and all your summer cookout favorites.

Hot dog topped with spicy relish.

Inspired by the famous hot sauce served at Ted’s Hot Dogs, a beloved chain of charcoal broiled hot dog restaurants in Buffalo, NY, this spicy relish recipe is my all-time favorite cookout condiment. It has nostalgic appeal for me, as I spent my childhood vacations visiting grandparents in Buffalo, and no visit was ever complete without a trip to Ted’s for a foot-long with Ted’s hot sauce.

This version is not an exact copycat of Ted’s, but it’s pretty close, and it happens to be the easiest thing in the world to make—just three ingredients, and they all come from jars. Slather it on hot dogs, steakhouse burgers, smash burgers, sausages, or pretty much anything in place of ketchup. For the full Ted’s experience, try to find Sahlen’s Original Smokehouse Hot Dogs (in my area, Wegmans carries them); they are the best!

“I’ve loved Ted’s hot dog sauce for decades. I’ve been trying to do a copycat for years, but never came close. This recipe nailed it!”

What You’ll Need To Make Spicy Relish

spicy relish ingredients

To make spicy relish, you’ll need Heinz chili sauce, sweet relish, and hot sauce (such as Tabasco).

Step-by-Step Instructions

In a small bowl, mix together the chili sauce, relish, and hot sauce. Stir well, then taste and add more hot sauce if you’d like it spicier.

Spoon in a bowl of mixed relish.

Creative Ways To Use Spicy Relish: Toppings, Mix-Ins & More

  • Use it as a dip for potato chips
  • Stir it into mayo or sour cream for an easy spicy sandwich spread or burger sauce.
  • Add a spoonful to tuna or egg salad for a kick of heat and extra flavor.
  • Spread it on grilled cheese before cooking—it adds a sweet-spicy edge that pairs great with melty cheese.
  • Top off grilled sausages or bratwursts. It’s just as good as mustard… maybe better.
  • Mix it into deviled eggs. A little relish goes a long way in leveling up the flavor.
  • Spoon it over grilled chicken or pork. It adds brightness and heat without overpowering.

  • Hi Jenn
Thank you for your wonderful recipes.
I’m in Australia and can’t source the correct sauce. Would Heinz Sweet Chili Sauce be OK? And would I still need the sweet relish one?

    • Hi Michele, I don’t recommend that but you can use ketchup with a touch of hot sauce.

  • Do you enjoy this on foods other than hot dogs? I’d love suggestions as it does look tasty but we rarely eat hotdogs. Thanks!

I’m a mustard sauerkraut gal, but when I saw that this was your favorite BBQ condiment I had to try it. I have to say it was really good! I wish we could get those Sahlen hot dogs in Utah.
