Rich, chocolaty, and loaded with sweet banana flavor, this chocolate banana bread turns those spotted bananas on your counter into an irresistible snack that’s wonderful any time of day.

If you love banana bread but never say no to chocolate, this chocolate banana bread combines the best of both. Cocoa powder and plenty of chocolate chips create rich chocolate flavor, while sour cream keeps every slice exceptionally moist and tender. Ripe bananas add natural sweetness and plenty of banana flavor. It comes together like a classic quick bread but tastes almost like chocolate cake—perfect for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or dessert.
Love chocolate quick breads? Be sure to try my chocolate zucchini bread too—it’s just as rich, moist, and chocolatey.
“Exquisite, fabulous, hands down the most beautiful, moist, decadent, delicious, cake-like, chocolaty, awesome banana bread I’ve ever had.”
What You’ll Need To Make Chocolate Banana Bread

- All-purpose flour: Provides the structure for the loaf. Measure it by spooning the flour into your measuring cup and leveling it off with a knife rather than scooping directly from the bag, which can pack in too much flour and lead to a dry loaf.
- Natural unsweetened cocoa powder: Gives the bread its rich chocolate flavor. Be sure to use natural cocoa powder rather than Dutch-process cocoa, as its acidity reacts with the baking soda to help the loaf rise properly.
- Baking soda: The leavening that gives the bread its lift and tender crumb. It reacts with the acidity in the natural cocoa powder and sour cream. (Baking powder is never a suitable substitute; for more on the difference between the two, see my guide to baking soda vs. baking powder.)
- Salt: Enhances both the chocolate and banana flavors while balancing the sweetness. All sweet treats need a touch of salt!
- Unsalted butter: Adds richness and buttery flavor. Make sure it’s softened to room temperature so it creams easily with the sugar.
- Sugar: Sweetens the bread while also contributing to its soft, tender texture.
- Large eggs: Bind the batter together and provide structure.
- Mashed bananas: The riper the bananas, the better. Look for peels that are heavily speckled or mostly brown, as overripe bananas are sweeter, softer, and mash more easily into the batter. Frozen bananas work well too (see my post how to freeze bananas for details on freezing and thawing). Pro tip: To quickly ripen bananas, store them in a loosely sealed brown paper bag.
- Sour cream: One of the keys to this recipe. It makes the loaf exceptionally moist and tender while its acidity works with the baking soda to create a lighter texture. Full-fat plain Greek yogurt can be substituted in a pinch.
- Vanilla extract: Rounds out the flavors and enhances both the chocolate and banana.
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips: Create little pockets of melted chocolate throughout the loaf for a double dose of chocolate. Feel free to stir in a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans for crunch, or substitute some of the chocolate chips with white chocolate or peanut butter chips for a fun variation.

STEP-BY-STEP Instructions
Step 1: Mix the dry ingredients. Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 2: Cream the butter and sugar. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. This step helps create a tender crumb, so don’t rush it.
Pro tip: Make sure your butter is fully softened before you start — it should give easily when you press it but still hold its shape. If it’s too cold, it won’t cream properly; if it’s too warm and greasy, you won’t get that light, fluffy texture.

Step 3: Add the eggs. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until fully incorporated before adding the next.

Step 4: Add the dry ingredients. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and beat gently until just combined.

Step 5: Mix in the bananas, sour cream, and vanilla. Mix in the mashed bananas, sour cream, and vanilla until just evenly incorporated. It’s important to avoid overmixing once the flour is added, as it develops the gluten in the flour, which can make quick breads tough instead of tender.

Step 6: Fold in the chocolate chips. Add the chocolate chips and fold with a rubber spatula until evenly incorporated. The batter will be quite thick—that’s exactly what you want. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Don’t worry if it isn’t perfectly level, as it will even out as it bakes.

Step 7: Bake and cool. Bake for about 70 minutes, or until done. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with a few moist crumbs attached but no wet batter. Because chocolate batters are dark, it’s harder to judge doneness by color alone. Let the bread rest in the pan briefly, then turn it out onto a rack to finish cooling. The bread is best freshly baked, but keeps at room temperature for up to 3 days or can be frozen for longer storage.
Freezing tip: If you’d like to enjoy the bread as an occasional snack when a craving strikes, before freezing, slice the bread and wrap the slices individually— that way you can pull out exactly what you need rather than thawing the whole loaf.

Chocolate Banana Bread
Ingredients
- 1¼ cups all-purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled-off
- ¼ cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder, such as Hershey's (see note)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup mashed very ripe bananas, from 2 to 3 brown bananas
- ½ cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and set a rack in the middle position. Grease a 9 x 5-in (23 x 13-cm) loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray.
- In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk until there are no more lumps in the cocoa powder and the mixture is well combined. Set aside.
- In a large bowl or electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or beaters, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, incorporating well after each addition. Add the dry ingredients and beat gently until just combined. Add the bananas, sour cream and vanilla and mix on low speed to combine. Fold in the chocolate chips. Do not overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached, about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Let the loaf rest in the pan for about 10 minutes, run a blunt knife around the edges to loosen, then turn it out onto a rack to cool completely.
Notes
- There are two types of unsweetened cocoa powder: natural (such as Hershey's) and Dutch-processed. Dutch-processed will not work in this recipe.
- Make-Ahead/Freezing Instructions: The bread is best enjoyed fresh, but it can be wrapped in aluminum foil and stored at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you'd like to keep it longer, the bread can be frozen for up to 3 months. After it is completely cooled, wrap it securely in aluminum foil, freezer wrap, or place in a freezer bag. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

Oh my goodness what a delicious chocolate banana cake! This cake is so moist not to sweet and perfect! Thank you Jen! ALL YOUR RECIPES ARE PERFECTLY DELICIOUS!!!
❤️
Wonderful banana bread! Tasty and moist! Only problem is… it always seems to disappear 🙂
Seriously though, everyone in my house loved them. I made them again for my dad’s coworkers (he works in a nursing home) to express my gratitude for their work during this time. Thanks so much for the recipe!
Glad you all like it (and how nice that you supported the employees in the nursing home by sending in something sweet). ❤️
Amazing recipe. The best one I’ve ever tried. It came out fluffy, chocolatey and decadent. I’ll definitely make this again and share with others.
I made this today. From Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
I’ve tweaked the recipe a bit since I do not have cocoa powder. Used melted Lindt Dark Chocolate 78% cocoa, dark chocolate chunk, flour at 1 and half cup instead, used brown sugar 1/3 cup only and banana 2 cups. I’m happy with the result. The sweetness just nice with the dark chocolate bitter taste. I love it. And I do agreed with some of the review. The banana taste it’s not strong even though I’ve used 2 cups.
Overall I’m happy with the first trial and planning to bake this for my mum in law for mother’s day that coming soon.
These are really good! I followed the recipe exactly. I made it in muffin form though. They took 17 min to bake with the yellow scoop. Next time I might use closer to 1 cup of chocolate chips since you can never have too many chocolate chips. This is a keeper!!!
Again, I wish I would have doubled your recipe. The recipe was easy, moist and absolutely delicious! Next time, I will double the recipe and freeze one for later. Delicious and not overly sweet. I got 1 slice and my husband and kids devoured the rest.
Say what?! My taste buds were singing “is it banana or chocolate”…well, it’s like two amazing breads colliding together for me to justify eating a healthy version of chocolate cake. It’s delicious warm and a true break from the chaos outside in our world today. It’s a comforting treat that was even better to bake along with my daughter, Caroline. Thanks for ALL your recipes. Your food is truly an act of love, created and made with love – to share with those you love.
❤️ Glad you enjoyed it!
OMG! This is one of the best banana bread recipes I have ever made. I have made four loaves in the past three days and everyone that I have given some to absolutely loves it! Don’t skimp on the chocolate chips it gives the bread the perfect texture and that extra chocolate kick.
Made this for comfort food this week and the family loved it. I make banana bread all the time but this chocolate one was decadent! Thank you
I only have Fry’s Premium Cocoa. Is it ok if I use baking powder instead of baking soda with this recipe.
I wouldn’t recommend it, Jacinta — sorry!
