Rich, chocolaty, and loaded with sweet banana flavor, this chocolate banana bread turns those spotted bananas on your counter into an irresistible snack that’s wonderful any time of day.

If you love banana bread but never say no to chocolate, this chocolate banana bread combines the best of both. Cocoa powder and plenty of chocolate chips create rich chocolate flavor, while sour cream keeps every slice exceptionally moist and tender. Ripe bananas add natural sweetness and plenty of banana flavor. It comes together like a classic quick bread but tastes almost like chocolate cake—perfect for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or dessert.
Love chocolate quick breads? Be sure to try my chocolate zucchini bread too—it’s just as rich, moist, and chocolatey.
“Exquisite, fabulous, hands down the most beautiful, moist, decadent, delicious, cake-like, chocolaty, awesome banana bread I’ve ever had.”
What You’ll Need To Make Chocolate Banana Bread

- All-purpose flour: Provides the structure for the loaf. Measure it by spooning the flour into your measuring cup and leveling it off with a knife rather than scooping directly from the bag, which can pack in too much flour and lead to a dry loaf.
- Natural unsweetened cocoa powder: Gives the bread its rich chocolate flavor. Be sure to use natural cocoa powder rather than Dutch-process cocoa, as its acidity reacts with the baking soda to help the loaf rise properly.
- Baking soda: The leavening that gives the bread its lift and tender crumb. It reacts with the acidity in the natural cocoa powder and sour cream. (Baking powder is never a suitable substitute; for more on the difference between the two, see my guide to baking soda vs. baking powder.)
- Salt: Enhances both the chocolate and banana flavors while balancing the sweetness. All sweet treats need a touch of salt!
- Unsalted butter: Adds richness and buttery flavor. Make sure it’s softened to room temperature so it creams easily with the sugar.
- Sugar: Sweetens the bread while also contributing to its soft, tender texture.
- Large eggs: Bind the batter together and provide structure.
- Mashed bananas: The riper the bananas, the better. Look for peels that are heavily speckled or mostly brown, as overripe bananas are sweeter, softer, and mash more easily into the batter. Frozen bananas work well too (see my post how to freeze bananas for details on freezing and thawing). Pro tip: To quickly ripen bananas, store them in a loosely sealed brown paper bag.
- Sour cream: One of the keys to this recipe. It makes the loaf exceptionally moist and tender while its acidity works with the baking soda to create a lighter texture. Full-fat plain Greek yogurt can be substituted in a pinch.
- Vanilla extract: Rounds out the flavors and enhances both the chocolate and banana.
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips: Create little pockets of melted chocolate throughout the loaf for a double dose of chocolate. Feel free to stir in a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans for crunch, or substitute some of the chocolate chips with white chocolate or peanut butter chips for a fun variation.

STEP-BY-STEP Instructions
Step 1: Mix the dry ingredients. Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 2: Cream the butter and sugar. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. This step helps create a tender crumb, so don’t rush it.
Pro tip: Make sure your butter is fully softened before you start — it should give easily when you press it but still hold its shape. If it’s too cold, it won’t cream properly; if it’s too warm and greasy, you won’t get that light, fluffy texture.

Step 3: Add the eggs. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until fully incorporated before adding the next.

Step 4: Add the dry ingredients. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and beat gently until just combined.

Step 5: Mix in the bananas, sour cream, and vanilla. Mix in the mashed bananas, sour cream, and vanilla until just evenly incorporated. It’s important to avoid overmixing once the flour is added, as it develops the gluten in the flour, which can make quick breads tough instead of tender.

Step 6: Fold in the chocolate chips. Add the chocolate chips and fold with a rubber spatula until evenly incorporated. The batter will be quite thick—that’s exactly what you want. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Don’t worry if it isn’t perfectly level, as it will even out as it bakes.

Step 7: Bake and cool. Bake for about 70 minutes, or until done. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with a few moist crumbs attached but no wet batter. Because chocolate batters are dark, it’s harder to judge doneness by color alone. Let the bread rest in the pan briefly, then turn it out onto a rack to finish cooling. The bread is best freshly baked, but keeps at room temperature for up to 3 days or can be frozen for longer storage.
Freezing tip: If you’d like to enjoy the bread as an occasional snack when a craving strikes, before freezing, slice the bread and wrap the slices individually— that way you can pull out exactly what you need rather than thawing the whole loaf.

Chocolate Banana Bread
Ingredients
- 1¼ cups all-purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled-off
- ¼ cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder, such as Hershey's (see note)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup mashed very ripe bananas, from 2 to 3 brown bananas
- ½ cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and set a rack in the middle position. Grease a 9 x 5-in (23 x 13-cm) loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray.
- In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk until there are no more lumps in the cocoa powder and the mixture is well combined. Set aside.
- In a large bowl or electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or beaters, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, incorporating well after each addition. Add the dry ingredients and beat gently until just combined. Add the bananas, sour cream and vanilla and mix on low speed to combine. Fold in the chocolate chips. Do not overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached, about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Let the loaf rest in the pan for about 10 minutes, run a blunt knife around the edges to loosen, then turn it out onto a rack to cool completely.
Notes
- There are two types of unsweetened cocoa powder: natural (such as Hershey's) and Dutch-processed. Dutch-processed will not work in this recipe.
- Make-Ahead/Freezing Instructions: The bread is best enjoyed fresh, but it can be wrapped in aluminum foil and stored at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you'd like to keep it longer, the bread can be frozen for up to 3 months. After it is completely cooled, wrap it securely in aluminum foil, freezer wrap, or place in a freezer bag. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

Hey Jen! I live in the Netherlands and can only find Dutch processed cocoa powder here. Can I adjust the recipe in some way to make it delicious?
Hi Paula, I wish I could help with adjustments that need to be made, but I just don’t know – I’m sorry! If it’s reasonably priced to do it, you could order the natural cocoa powder online.
I only had the dutched cocoa powder and took the chance. I put some in a small pan and it worked but the loaf flopped. The flavor was yummy, I should have listened but had all other ingredients. I’m going to make this again with the correct cocoa powder. I also used mayo since I didn’t have sour cream (I looked up a substitute).
Thanks for the tip on mayo.
Very good! I couldn’t see the baking time in the recipe so I started checking after half an hour- done in 60 minutes in my oven. I only had Dutch processed cocoa on hand and it was sufficiently leavened. But I’m going to need a larger pan if it rises more with natural cocoa. Thanks for the nice recipe!
Just made this and it is delicious!
OMG! This was ridiculously moist and delicious. Plus, the recipe was easy to follow. I’m a hit at the office now. Jenn’s recipes never fail to impress. I’m so glad I purchased her books.
I made this last weekend. I didn’t have sour cream on hand so I used a small container of unflavored Greek yogurt, which adds protein. Also opted to forgo the chips and just used the cocoa powder. Delicious! My son has been having it every morning for breakfast.
Made this today with my overripe bananas… threw some walnuts in and topped it with dark chocolate chips… delicious!!!!! Another winning recipe!
I just made this bread and it came out amazing! I substituted plain Greek yogurt for the sour cream and skipped the chocolate chips…amazing!! Thank you for this delicious recipe!!
Hi Jenn .. I make this recipe all the time but just got a fluted bake Bundt pan 9×9’will this work with your original recipe .. FYI bought the pan to make my Polish aunts favorite vintage recipe for coffee cloud cake 🤗
Hi Patricia, There’s always the risk of sticking with a Bundt pan, especially when chocolate chips are included. Not sure it’s worth the risk!
Exquisite, fabulous, hands down the most beautiful, moist, decadent, delicious, cakelike chocolaty awesome banana bread I’ve ever had. I followed directions specifically, only adding a handful of chocolate chips to the top on the way in the oven. Perfecto!! Thank you 🙂
