Rich, chocolaty, and loaded with sweet banana flavor, this chocolate banana bread turns those spotted bananas on your counter into an irresistible snack that’s wonderful any time of day.

If you love banana bread but never say no to chocolate, this chocolate banana bread combines the best of both. Cocoa powder and plenty of chocolate chips create rich chocolate flavor, while sour cream keeps every slice exceptionally moist and tender. Ripe bananas add natural sweetness and plenty of banana flavor. It comes together like a classic quick bread but tastes almost like chocolate cake—perfect for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or dessert.
Love chocolate quick breads? Be sure to try my chocolate zucchini bread too—it’s just as rich, moist, and chocolatey.
“Exquisite, fabulous, hands down the most beautiful, moist, decadent, delicious, cake-like, chocolaty, awesome banana bread I’ve ever had.”
What You’ll Need To Make Chocolate Banana Bread

- All-purpose flour: Provides the structure for the loaf. Measure it by spooning the flour into your measuring cup and leveling it off with a knife rather than scooping directly from the bag, which can pack in too much flour and lead to a dry loaf.
- Natural unsweetened cocoa powder: Gives the bread its rich chocolate flavor. Be sure to use natural cocoa powder rather than Dutch-process cocoa, as its acidity reacts with the baking soda to help the loaf rise properly.
- Baking soda: The leavening that gives the bread its lift and tender crumb. It reacts with the acidity in the natural cocoa powder and sour cream. (Baking powder is never a suitable substitute; for more on the difference between the two, see my guide to baking soda vs. baking powder.)
- Salt: Enhances both the chocolate and banana flavors while balancing the sweetness. All sweet treats need a touch of salt!
- Unsalted butter: Adds richness and buttery flavor. Make sure it’s softened to room temperature so it creams easily with the sugar.
- Sugar: Sweetens the bread while also contributing to its soft, tender texture.
- Large eggs: Bind the batter together and provide structure.
- Mashed bananas: The riper the bananas, the better. Look for peels that are heavily speckled or mostly brown, as overripe bananas are sweeter, softer, and mash more easily into the batter. Frozen bananas work well too (see my post how to freeze bananas for details on freezing and thawing). Pro tip: To quickly ripen bananas, store them in a loosely sealed brown paper bag.
- Sour cream: One of the keys to this recipe. It makes the loaf exceptionally moist and tender while its acidity works with the baking soda to create a lighter texture. Full-fat plain Greek yogurt can be substituted in a pinch.
- Vanilla extract: Rounds out the flavors and enhances both the chocolate and banana.
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips: Create little pockets of melted chocolate throughout the loaf for a double dose of chocolate. Feel free to stir in a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans for crunch, or substitute some of the chocolate chips with white chocolate or peanut butter chips for a fun variation.

STEP-BY-STEP Instructions
Step 1: Mix the dry ingredients. Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 2: Cream the butter and sugar. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. This step helps create a tender crumb, so don’t rush it.
Pro tip: Make sure your butter is fully softened before you start — it should give easily when you press it but still hold its shape. If it’s too cold, it won’t cream properly; if it’s too warm and greasy, you won’t get that light, fluffy texture.

Step 3: Add the eggs. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until fully incorporated before adding the next.

Step 4: Add the dry ingredients. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and beat gently until just combined.

Step 5: Mix in the bananas, sour cream, and vanilla. Mix in the mashed bananas, sour cream, and vanilla until just evenly incorporated. It’s important to avoid overmixing once the flour is added, as it develops the gluten in the flour, which can make quick breads tough instead of tender.

Step 6: Fold in the chocolate chips. Add the chocolate chips and fold with a rubber spatula until evenly incorporated. The batter will be quite thick—that’s exactly what you want. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Don’t worry if it isn’t perfectly level, as it will even out as it bakes.

Step 7: Bake and cool. Bake for about 70 minutes, or until done. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with a few moist crumbs attached but no wet batter. Because chocolate batters are dark, it’s harder to judge doneness by color alone. Let the bread rest in the pan briefly, then turn it out onto a rack to finish cooling. The bread is best freshly baked, but keeps at room temperature for up to 3 days or can be frozen for longer storage.
Freezing tip: If you’d like to enjoy the bread as an occasional snack when a craving strikes, before freezing, slice the bread and wrap the slices individually— that way you can pull out exactly what you need rather than thawing the whole loaf.

Chocolate Banana Bread
Ingredients
- 1¼ cups all-purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled-off
- ¼ cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder, such as Hershey's (see note)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup mashed very ripe bananas, from 2 to 3 brown bananas
- ½ cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and set a rack in the middle position. Grease a 9 x 5-in (23 x 13-cm) loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray.
- In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk until there are no more lumps in the cocoa powder and the mixture is well combined. Set aside.
- In a large bowl or electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or beaters, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, incorporating well after each addition. Add the dry ingredients and beat gently until just combined. Add the bananas, sour cream and vanilla and mix on low speed to combine. Fold in the chocolate chips. Do not overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached, about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Let the loaf rest in the pan for about 10 minutes, run a blunt knife around the edges to loosen, then turn it out onto a rack to cool completely.
Notes
- There are two types of unsweetened cocoa powder: natural (such as Hershey's) and Dutch-processed. Dutch-processed will not work in this recipe.
- Make-Ahead/Freezing Instructions: The bread is best enjoyed fresh, but it can be wrapped in aluminum foil and stored at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you'd like to keep it longer, the bread can be frozen for up to 3 months. After it is completely cooled, wrap it securely in aluminum foil, freezer wrap, or place in a freezer bag. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

Hi Jenn, this is an unbelievable banana bread! I am wondering if I can use the same recipe & measurements to make these as muffins? Thanks so much 🙂
So glad you liked it Kate! Sure, you can turn this into muffins – I’d keep the oven temp the same and start checking them for doneness at about 23 minutes.
Thank you so much, Jenn, for always replying and so promptly, too. You seem like the hardest worker ever.. Will try them today!
Dear Jenn, I followed your advice and checked for doneness at 23 minutes and took the muffins out just a minute later! They turned out absolutely perfect! Beautifully rounded on the top with a nice crust, and ever so pillow-ey and moist on the inside. I used monkfruit sweetener for the first time, as my Mom is visiting and does not like sugar, and she gobbled up the whole muffin in no time! Our neighbors loved them, too, and they have the ultimate sweet tooth! This recipe is like a double whammy for both chocolate lovers and banana bread lovers. I’ve been following you now for well over a decade and you have always been such a wonderful, kind and caring Chef, with the most easy-to-follow but all such INCREDIBLE recipes. The step by step photos are everything to me and made me gain confidence with every attempt at cooking and baking. My sister-in-law and I are always telling each other which of your recipes we tried, whenever we visit each other 😀
Kate, thank you for such kind words – you made my day! ❣️
I just made this last night and it’s delicious! Will definitely make this again. This recipe is a keeper!
5 stars indeed! Wonderfully rich and not too sweet. I substituted Greek yogurt for the sour cream and baked in a ceramic bundt pan. Loveeeeeee.
Jenn you never cease to amaze me with your amazing recipes. This was absolutely delicious! I have an old Banana bread recipe I have used for the last 2 decades which I will be replacing with this one! It came out moist and cake-like and not too sweet! My husband LOVED it so much and said it was the best Banana Bread he has ever had! I can’t wait until my sons come home so that I can make it for them!! I so appreciate you always helping to make me a wonderful cook!!
Jenn, I have made this Chocolate Banana bread so many times. I have made it for my Husband and myself, also for my children and grandchildren. They LOVE, LOVE it. I use the mini chocolate chips in mine. This is the Best chocolate banana bread recipe.
Thank You,
Jennifer
How long would you recommend baking for mini loaves? I was going to use pans that are 4.33inX3.14inX1.29in
Hi Amy, I’d start checking them at about 30 minutes. Enjoy!
can I use CACAO powder instead of cocoa?
Hi Anne, I don’t recommend it. Sorry!
Since I’m concerned about lead in cocoa and chocolate, I used the Nativas cocoa powder they sell at whole foods and it worked fabulous.
This was the best banana bread ever. Best texture by far of any banana bread. Definitely my go-to now. Thank you for putting the measurements in grams. I weighed out the bananas and had only 83% of the bananas. So I cut the by rest of the ingredients by 83%.
I’d be curious to try a brown butter roasted banana version without chocolate. Can you please post one LOL?
This is an incredible recipe! I made it with King Arthur gluten-free flour, 0% plain Greek yogurt because I had no sour cream, and Hershey’s special dark cocoa, which is a mixture of natural and Dutch. Two and 1/2 very ripe bananas. Beautiful texture, moist and delicious.
I used the chocolate chips and frankly, I don’t think it added anything and I’ll leave them out next time. Normally, I say the more chocolate better, but the texture and flavor of this was just perfect just the way it was.
I used Dutch processed cocoa and it turned out good. I am sure that natural cocoa powder would give it a better rise and a better texture, but I like the depth of flavor that Dutch cocoa imparts. (Cacao Barry Extra Brute Cocoa, it’s fantastic, thank me later)
used the Dutch cocoa and GF flour. Just soooooo good.
This recipe makes an excellent chocolate banana bread – so moist, and flavorful! I substituted monkfruit sweetener for half of the sugar, and had great results. I chose to bake it in a seasonal bundt pan, which reduced the bake time to 50 minutes.
Thank you for a great recipe!
