With Oreo eyes, Junior Mint pupils, and candy beaks, these Halloween owl cupcakes are an easy decorating project that’s especially fun to make with kids.

These owl cupcakes are perfect for Halloween parties, and they’re easy enough for little kids to help make. The photo below, taken years ago, shows my daughter and her friend making these cupcakes. Clearly, we were gearing up for the Halloween sugar rush—just look at my daughter with a cupcake in one hand, a lollipop in the other, and a cookie on her T-shirt. I’m pretty sure that’s what pure happiness looks like!

“I made these for my daughters Magical forest birthday party and they were such a big hit! So super cute and easy. You could make with mini cupcakes and mini oreo cookies too.”

What You’ll Need To Make Halloween Owl Cupcakes

How To Make Halloween Owl Cupcakes

Frost the cupcakes: Spread a generous layer of frosting over each cupcake, smoothing the top so you have an even surface for the decorations.

Make the Oreo eyes: Gently twist the Oreos apart. Place two creme-topped Oreo halves on each cupcake. Press a Junior Mint into the center of each one to make the pupils, then add the Oreo pieces above the eyes for the eyebrows.

Add the beaks: Place an orange Reese’s Pieces or M&M between the eyes to make the beak.

Planning ahead? You can make the cupcakes and Oreo decorations in advance, then assemble the owls shortly before serving so the cookies stay crisp. See the recipe card below for full make-ahead instructions.

With wide Oreo eyes and colorful candy beaks, these little owl cupcakes are almost too cute to eat.
Servings: 12 cupcakes
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Frost the cupcakes: Spread a smooth, generous layer of frosting on each cupcake.
  • Prepare the eyes: Twist the Oreo cookies in half. Separate the halves with and without the cream filling. Place two cream-filled halves, filling side up, on top of each frosted cupcake to create the owl’s eyes. Using a dab of frosting, stick a Junior Mint onto each eye for the pupils.
  • Make the eyebrows: Break 6 plain halves into two equal pieces to create 12 eyebrows. Insert the Oreo “eyebrows” into the frosting above the eyes, angling them so they stick up for a wide-eyed look.
  • Add the beaks: Place a Reese’s Pieces candy in the center, between the eyes, to create the owl’s beak.

Notes

Make-Ahead Instructions: You can bake the cupcakes a day or two in advance and store them in an airtight container at room temperature. You can also make and store the Oreo eyes and eyebrows in advance, ensuring they’re ready for quick assembly later. For best results, wait until just before serving to assemble the owls so the cookies and decorations stay crisp and don’t absorb moisture from the frosting.

The owls are so cute! With a partner I made 125 of these for a Halloween party at my daughters school. What a hit! They were pretty simple to assemble. Making sure the Owls looked nice and “white” was the only challenge. Thank you for sharing!
